Workflow template for Wall Opening Framing - Revit

What's in these files?

This workflow places families to frame openings such as doors and windows. It enables easy framing of door and window openings by combining two Dynamo scripts, structural wood family collections, and pre-built scheduling data. This workflow is designed for architects, designers, and manufacturers interested in simple wood framing within Revit.

Automated Framing & Customization

Using a Dynamo script, this workflow acts on a selected Revit wall or openings. This workflow includes two scripts; the first script frames a selected opening with wood elements and the second script automatically frames all openings in the selected wall.

Scheduling & Quantities

Built-in scheduling tools allow you to track quantities and dimensions of framing elements. Schedules are pre-created to extract the total linear feet of materials, and all framing in a wall. Accurate material quantities can be easily extracted from the schedule and exported for carbon calculations and other early-phase studies.

Structural Depth Matching

The thickness of the structure will match the “Structure” layer in the wall composition. All structural elements are assigned unique mark values and are associated with a wall and opening values.

In the download section there are 2 type of files: the Revit template files (2021-2025) and the 2 Dynamo scripts needed for this workflow (Openings generation and Framing). In the Revit template welcome page you can find the instructions on how to install the Dynamo scripts.

Limitations: while this workflow is beneficial for preliminary analysis, it isn’t intended for construction-grade framing and doesn’t replace Revit plugins like AGACAD or MWF.
