Bring data to your earliest design phases.

Estimate the carbon benefits of timber construction.

Compare impacts of complex assemblies that include timber, steel and concrete structures, along with biosourced insulation and acoustic systems.
Connect as a trial user with rapid scenario testing, or as an expert to inform regional archetypes and building assemblies for your own studio practice.

We offer:

  • The carbon calculation space’s most transparent and collaborative framework for AEC pros.
  • Our nonprofit, shareable infrastructure is connected to authoritative data sources and an open API, offering an integration layer between industries.
  • Our quantity-calculating engine is BIM-integrated, visually verifiable, and set up for self-publishing.

Our Mission

Our mission is to increase awareness of embodied carbon footprint and make it a key deciding factor during the early phases of the project, when changes are easiest to make.

Timber construction can be a key element in the movement to transform
the construction industry from a global polluter into a positive force for
embodied carbon storage. However, transparency data for timber and design with BIM modelling are both young and uncoordinated with each other.

Early design process is skewed by legacy assumptions, software, cost
uncertainties and habit, towards less sustainable materials.

As nonprofit advocates for bio-sourced materials, our our mission is to fill gaps with guidance and insight, and share open-sourced infrastructure to help with other teams working towards the same goals.

How does it work?

Users of the web app can rapidly build a scenario using only basic architectural program information (the type, size, and number of stories in the building. Advanced users can save preferences for their firm’s details and make side-by-side comparisons down to detailed assemblies.

The greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) per unit volume of each material is calculated with an authoritative and improving external database (EC3). An expert dashboard curates regional timber systems.
Our engine and teaching aids “show the math” and helps automate the challenging conversions between volumes, materials, and sub-components that often obscure early-phase comparative scenarios.

Evaluate your project CO2 emissions in three simple steps

Define a project by choosing an archetype structure and building parameters.
See your design via an interactive model generator (thanks to the open-sourced platform builders at Speckle Systems).
Get a data report showing the detailed carbon emissions associated with your design.

BIM integration

The CarbonFixers app is a part of the larger Offsite Wood BIM initiative, so all the timber and bio-sourced material assemblies are available for download on offsitewood.org.

The community of timber system producers is our source of expertise and detailing, so the Offsite Wood BIM content creators are representing a growing industry with a growing library of options.

As the tools and workflows mature we will be announcing partnerships with more advanced studios and with other tool-building teams. Click below if you would like to suggest an alliance, or stay informed.

How can I get involved?

The CarbonFixers is a free tool, built to help you make the right decisions when planning your construction projects. We want to make sure that the platform includes all necessary features and functionalities to allow you to accurately measure the environmental impact when using timber versus other construction materials.

If you want to help us shape the future of CarbonFixers by providing feedback, please sign-up to participate in our Beta programme.
